“If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody,” Annabelle often says, quoting a proverb that resonates deeply with her life’s work. Her caregiving journey began in 2017 when she moved her family from Georgia to Oregon to care for Nana, who was recovering from a fall at the age of 91. The challenges were immediate, with multiple surgeries and a subsequent move to a care facility. However, the transition proved devastating for her grandmother.
“Within three days, Nana shut down,” Annabelle recalls. Once talkative and vibrant, her grandmother stopped speaking, refused food, and began rapidly declining. Annabelle knew something had to change. She took her grandmother on outings, even bringing Nana’s cat for a sense of home, but nothing worked. The turning point came when Annabelle and her family made the decision to bring Nana back home.
“There’s No Place Like Home”
Returning Nana to her own home proved transformative. Surrounded by familiar comforts, family, and her beloved cat, Nana regained her spirit. “There’s no place like home,” she would often say, a sentiment that became a guiding principle for Annabelle. In the year and a half that followed, Nana thrived. She found joy, connection, and a renewed sense of purpose.
The family cherished every moment of that time, knowing it wouldn’t last forever. Nana’s final wish, spoken to Annabelle one evening, left an indelible mark: “Promise me you will continue home care for us old people.” Those words became Annabelle’s mission, driving her to ensure others could experience the comfort and dignity of aging at home.
